If you’re feeling like you’ve been bitten by the travel bug, but don’t have the luxury of much time, one of these day trips can totally scratch that itch while only requiring a modicum of time. Wanderlust can definitely hit hard seemingly out of nowhere, but thankfully there are plenty of excellent options when it comes to having a little getaway and a change of scenery. Hop aboard a traditional Dhow boat and set out to Musandam Khasab in Oman and get ready for some sailing through what some call the Norway of the Middle East. Take in the beauty of the turquoise waters, marvel at the fjords that jut along the waterway, and keep a careful eye out for frolicking dolphins which are very abundant in the area. Make sure to take your bathing suit as many cruises will make stops to allow you to swim in all that pristine water. Depending on the package, some also include a meal or even camping as well and depart right from Dubai. If you would rather drive and discover the area for yourself, it is only a two and a half hour drive and well worth it!

Were you aware that the highest mountain in the UAE also hosts the world’s longest zip line? At the longest portion, you will be flying along for a solid 2-3 minutes and reach heights of up to 1689 meters above sea level, giving you plenty of time and altitude to appreciate the beauty of the area. If zip-lining just isn’t your cup of tea (even though you should definitely try it once, it’s incredible), then you do have other options that keep you a little closer to terra firma. The drive alone heading towards the peak is spectacular. There’s also a viewing deck park where you can watch people zip-lining or just take a deep breath and appreciate the unparalleled beauty all around you. There’s also an ice skating rink with a heck of a view and ice skates are included in the price of the ticket, so don’t worry if you forgot your half dozen pairs at home.

Just under an hour and a half from Dubai, you’ll find this market that is a bit of misnomer. The Friday Market is actually open every day of the week and sells everything from fresh local produce to carpets, to crafts. It’s a lot of fun walking around the stalls and seeing what’s on offer. After you finish shopping, if you’d like to stretch your day trip a little further, consider stopping by the Hatta Heritage Village for some more local flavor and a bit of history appreciation. It’s free and offers a look back in time with a restored ancient village and info on Hajar life at the time.

Okay, first of all, how could you not want to snorkel off an island that shares a name with one of the cutest cartoon dogs ever? This island, off the coast of Fujairah, is just under two hours away by car from Dubai, and has formed a breath-taking coral reef. The visibility is fantastic, and the fish which call this reef home is said to be remarkably diverse. While our vote would be as much time in the water or on the beach as possible, there are also a few points of historical interest available in the area if you’d like to make one of your day trips more like a “day or two” trip. Check out what is thought to be the oldest mosque in the UAE, the Al-Bidyah mosque. Or visit the Fujairah Heritage Village to get your culture on.
