2020 Slang You Need to Know

With different eras – especially now heavily influenced by pop culture and social media – come different slang terms. Today, we, at The Modern East, have come up with a list of trendy and popular 2020 slang terms you absolutely need to know. Interested? Keep reading to find out what they are!

“Cap” and “No Cap”

To “cap” is to lie about something, whereas “no cap” means to tell the truth. In context – when catching someone out in a lie you’d say “that’s cap, bro”. Or when you’re telling an unbelievable story you’d add “no cap,” at the end – to make it a little more believable.

“Periodt”

“Periodt” is a word used at the end of a sentence, meant to add emphasis to a point that has been made. It is often regarded as a more extreme or intense version of “period.” It is also often preceded by the words “and that’s on” to add further emphasis. And yes, we add a T at the end because we make our statements “to the t” – get it?

“Snatched”

The word “snatched” has two common definitions. The first refers to when someone is wearing something that is very fashionable or has a look that looks really good. The second refers to the process of supporting an insult against someone who has lost an argument.

“Bet”

“Bet” is a word that has many uses – kinda like how Arabs use “yalla” for – pretty much – any situation. It can be used in lieu of the word “OK” or “YES,” but it can also be used as a response when someone challenges you, instead of saying “watch” or “we’ll see.”

“Flex”

To “flex” (as a verb) is to knowingly flaunt and show off. As a noun, a “flex” is the thing being shown off itself. For Instance, “That fit (outfit) is such a flex”.

“Lowkey” and “Highkey”

“Lowkey” means slightly, secretly, modestly, or discretely. It’s the opposite of “highkey,” for when you’re sincerely or assertively into something. For example – “I lowkey love this song,” or “I highkey want to go home early today.”
