What To Do/See In Hungary

When you’re thinking of places to travel to, Hungary might not be one of those places that rank very high on your list. You might have toyed with the idea of seeing Budapest. And you should, because, wow! But, Hungary has so much more to offer beside its capital city. Let us give you some really good reasons to add Hungary to your travel bucket list.

Lake Balaton

If you’re of the opinion that a vacation should include plenty of relaxing, you’ll want to make sure you make a stop here. Lake Balaton is Hungary’s largest lake, as well as the largest in all of Central Europe. The spot is rather popular with locals in the summer months, for obvious reasons. There are plenty of opportunities for boating and swimming. Nearby, you’ll find Tihany, a popular holiday resort. It’s been designated as a nature reserve, so that means a good portion is closed to traffic. Here you’ll find pleasant walking trails and ample opportunity to explore. There’s also the Inner Harbor, where you can enjoy a lakeside walkway and watch the ships as they come and go. If you’d like to go for a sail yourself, there are boats to charter at a reasonable price.

Pecs

While seeing Budapest while you’re in Hungary might be a no brainer, this lovely city is worth a visit as well. Pecs is a delightful multicultural city. It’s such a wonderful melting pot of ethnic groups that it is one of UNESCO’s Cities of Peace. The museums here are absolutely top-notch and the architecture is truly a marvel. It’s a super charming city that you won’t regret making time to explore.

Aggtelek Karst National Park And Caves

This park in Hungary is absolutely massive. It covers almost 200 square kilometers. Within the park, you’ll find Baradia Cave. The cave was once used by humans more than 7000 years ago as a place to take shelter. The main tunnel is around 7km long and offers visitors spectacular sights. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are really something to behold. Sometimes concerts are even held within. Though some parts are off limits to tourists, there is plenty to explore. There are tours available, if you prefer your spelunking to be guided.

Hit Up A Spa

The Roman and Turkish influences on Hungary mean that there are some truly remarkable spa towns in the country. There are plenty of hot springs and baths for you to soak in. Hungary is said to have more than 1000 springs, ranging from thermal water baths to medicinal and natural spas. If you’re worried the water might be a bit chilly, depending on time of year, don’t. Many boast a toasty year round average temperature of 25 degrees C. Spa packages are very popular among tourists, and for good reason.

Walk Beside the Danube

The Danube is the large and beautiful river that flows through the country of Hungary. It essentially splits the capital city of Budapest in two. Traverse the Freedom Bridge that straddles the mighty waters for excellent views of the city, and the sunset. For a taste of old world luxury, you’ll want to hit up the Danube Promenade. Here you’ll find gorgeous views as you ogle the luxury hotels across the way. Oh, and there is that giant castle as well. There are also plenty of charming outdoor cafes to rest your weary feet, and enjoy some needed refreshment.
