Best Travel Gadgets and Apps

Travelling has never been easier. We have access to plenty of information to plan and save on travel, find our way around, stay safe, and find stuff to do. Depending on the trip, I always find that I use different apps or gadgets to make travel a little easier (or more fun!). The following are just a few of my favourites which I wouldn’t go without:

1. Waterproof Phone Case/ Pouch

Ironically, the first ‘gadget’ on my list is not so much a gadget, but instead it protects your most important one; your phone. Endlessly useful all of the time, your smartphone comes into a league of its own when you’re travelling; navigating strange streets or keeping in touch with your friends and family at home is a breeze. Still, your phone is very temperamental and even the slightest water or sand damage could wreck it beyond repair. Don’t risk it, when visiting beaches or any water, simply put your phone in a waterproof pouch (pictured) which can be easily found cheaply online. Not only will your phone be protected, but you can take cool instas underwater! You’ll thank me later.

2. TripCase

Gone are the days of handwritten notebooks that you will definitely not lose. Also gone are the days of boring excel documents to plan every detail of your trip. Recently, I was show the app TripCase which allows me to forward my booking confirmation emails to the app and, when I open the app again, it presents me with a beautifully laid-out itinerary. Everything from flights, hotels, activities, and meals can be imported into your itinerary making it easy to follow what happens when. Helpfully, if you’re short of ideas, the app can even make suggestions for nearby activities to fill your time.

3. Culture Trip

Looking through a million travel websites that look the same, endless stock images of beaches, and who knows how many reviews of tourist traps, I find that searching for travel inspiration and ideas for a trip can become really boring. The Culture Trip app aims to end this with an open platform providing the space for locals around the world to share their stories and ideas for activities and must-dos in their area. Instead of always following the crowd, Culture Trip can be an amazing source of unique getaways and experiences where you feel like you truly did have a one-off experience.

4. Google Maps App

I know that this is probably already a staple of your travel tech, providing easy directions around most major cities around the world. I use this app multiple times per day when I get travel and honestly, it’s hard to describe the app as anything other than a lifesaver. However, I included the app here not only to recommend (which I do), but to warn! The quality of mapping varies across the world and the directions you receive may be a little…questionable. When I visited Barcelona last year, following the directions from google too closely resulted in me getting very lost more than once. So, whilst you should definitely always keep this app close, remember to use your own senses too.

5. Anti-Theft Backpack

If you are travelling to a tourist hotspot, then you are likely sharing your space not only with other tourists but also pickpockets. This is a timeless, harsh reality of travel that isn’t going away anytime soon. Instead of spending your time constantly fearful that you are missing something, checking and double-checking pockets (as I have done in the past), secure your stuff with an anti-theft backpack. Prices and capabilities of these vary hugely, but for the extra careful, PacSafe’s Vibe range include protection from being cut open with a knife; standard locking protection; electronic-reader scam prevention; and, anti-theft anchor which allows you to attach your backpack to fixtures when you need to leave it somewhere. With this much protection, you really can have peace of mind that all your belongings are safe and get on with enjoying your trip!
